Tenera Environmental operates processing laboratories focusing on marine, estuarine, and freshwater phytoplankton, zooplankton (invertebrates), and ichthyoplankton (fish eggs and larvae). Our laboratories have processed thousands of samples and have established protocols for processing and identification that help ensure that data meet the highest standards for integrity and quality. Our scientists are recognized by their peers as some of the leading experts in the taxonomy of these organisms. We maintain one of the largest voucher collections of California and Hawaiian larval fishes outside of federal, state, and academic institutions. Many of these voucher samples have been verified using DNA analysis. Our laboratories are equipped with state of the art scientific equipment including numerous microscopes, digital imaging equipment and software. We also have worked on aging of fish larvae using otoliths (ear bones) that are as small as 20 microns. See our brochure.

Below are links to photographs of some of the phytoplankton, zooplankton (invertebrates), and ichthyoplankton (fish) processed in our laboratory facilities. There is also a link to a list of ichthyoplankton collected from California, Hawaii, and the Red Sea.
